Gunmen have shot dead five people in their homes in two northern cities in Nigeria, on monday, security forces say. The latest wave of attacks by suspected Boko Haram Sect members.
“Two people have been shot dead in Maiduguri today by Boko Haram members,” the operations officer for the remote northeastern city, Victor Ebheleme told REUTERS.
“The area in which the attack took place has been cordoned off and the killers have been trailed, but no arrests have been made yet.” he said.
Three Chadians were also killed in the city of Damaturu, Yobe State, the police commissioner for the city and surrounding states, Lawal Tanko told REUTERS.
President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in several states in the country including the areas were the most recent attacks occurred, on December 31. Closing borders with Niger, Chad and Cameroun, after the Christmas day attacks on churches and other targets, which claimed dozens of lives.
Maiduguri has been seen as Boko Harams base for operations, with Damaturu in several weeks has increasingly become their focal point for militant activities. It was also the scene of a fierce battle between Boko Haram and the military on December 24, which killed 50, many of which were militants.
