Nigeria: Fact-File About The New Inspector General Of Police

MD Abubakar

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 12, Bauchi, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, also known as “MD Abubakar” has been appointed as the acting Inspector General of Police.

Born on May 5, 1958 (age, 54), he hails from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

He enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force as a Cadet Inspector, on August 1, 1979. The acting IGP, who holds Diploma in Administration and Criminology, has meritoriously served the Nigerian Police in many areas and has occupied many posts. Important positions he held in the force include, Assistant Commissioner of Police, State CID, Sokoto Police Command; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Federal Operations, Force Headquarters, Lagos; and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Airport Police Command (MMIA), Lagos.

On his elevation to the position of Commissioner of Police in charge of many Police Commands across the Federation. Some of which are: Plateau, Abia, Kwara, Kano, Airport and Lagos State Police Commands.

While he was a Police Commissioner in Lagos, he had the habit of paying surprise visits to Commands and Divisional Headquarters at very odd hours. He was also very fond of patrolling the city at nights in unofficial vehicles. Sometimes, he would disguise himself to be able to catch his men in the act.

A very amiable and intelligent officer, he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General Of Police (AIG) and he subsequently became the AIG in charge of Zone 2, comprising Lagos and Ogun States. He was also the AIG Zone 5, Benin, comprising of Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States. He was later posted to Zone 6, comprising of Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Ebonyi States.

A detribalized Nigerian, MD Abubakar is currently in charge of Zone 12, Bauchi.

He is a member of the prestigious National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS). He had undergone several professional trainings locally and internationally, some of which are:
Intermediate Command Course – Jos;
Senior Command Course – Jos;
General Security Course – Isreal;
