Everytime I pick up a newspaper to read, I immediately feel disgusted by the frontpage of the paper. Catchy, unneeded, digressing news is what will be found on the frontpage. “100 PDP members defect to APC”, “N70bn Gone Missing”, Atiku said this…, Obasanjo said that… These are some news content that maybe found.
But what about the other issues? Economic development? Social development? Are they not relevant?
The media is this country releases news stories that are mainly following the trend of the moment. But when a new trend comes up, they dump the past trend. The next time reference is made to that trend again is when some similar occurs. For instance, in 2012-2013, they followed the the Subsidy removal protest, then they dumped that for the House of Reps Subsidy probe, they dumped the rest of the probe, including the one EFCC took to court, and focused on the Farouk Lawan and Otedola scandal. They didn’t even tell us how that issue died out, they just jumped straight to the SEC’s Aruma Otteh spending scandal, as usual they didn’t tell us how it ended, then they ran after the Stella Oduah car scandal. After which they jumped into the ASUU story, then the ridiculous Anambra Election, etc.
The media should be very careful! They should pursue each story well, and ensure that the truth is always reeled out to Nigerians. Information is a very vital tool in this dynamic world we now live in, the Nigerian media should ensure that they do not mislead us!
